Could the 2012 Porsche 911 Convertible be getting a folding hardtop?

Published by Barrier Porsche on August 31st, 2011

A recently discovered patent is suggesting the 2012 Porsche 911 Convertible could feature a new roof that is part hardtop and part soft top. The odd design certainly raises some eyebrows, but the roof section would apparently be metal while the rear window area has traditional canvas. This could help to eliminate the ungainly styling that is associated with folding metal roofs, but it also defeats some of the security benefits which are inherit in that design.  Curious about the exciting new features in the Porsche 911, come talk to Barrier Porsche in Bellevue!

The all-new Porsche 911 (991) is one of the most anticipated cars. While it’s merely a matter of hours until Porsche pulls the wraps off of the 2012 911 Coupe, many have been wondering about the roof for the 991 convertible models. Any discussion mostly comes down to this: Will Porsche be bold enough to introduce a metal folding roof?

Some time ago, Porsche filed a patent for a 4-panel metal folding roof. This made many believe that Porsche would actually follow the likes of the Ferrari California.

German Car Forum did a search for patent applications Porsche has filed and found patent US 7,607,715 B2 which reveals the twist. Porsche is apparently set to combine a regular canvas top with a metal folding roof.

The roof comprises of four panels with at least the first and fourth panel being sheet-like penals, i.e. metal panels. The suprise however is the canvas top layer covering the whole roof. This canvas layer is fixed permanently to the whole area of the first and fourth panel, yet it’s fixed to the two panels in the middle only partially. This allows the canvas to remain flexible in that area during roof operation.

This begs one question: Why? According to Porsche’s patent application, this invention makes sure that an “attractive outer contour is ensured by the sheet-like supporting elements when the roof is closed”. There might be no other canvas top sitting that tight when the roof is closed. It allows even the 911 convertible to sport the signature 911 roofline formerly found in the coupe models only.

One would assume that 911 convertible owners wouldn’t want to miss a canvas top yet also welcome the increased ridigity coming with metal folding roofs (when closed).

New Porsche 911 shows up with seven-speed manual

Published by Barrier Porsche on August 26th, 2011

Unlike many sport luxury carmakers, Porsche has managed to keep its signature model, the 911, small and lightweight. When we tested the current 911 GTS, we were impressed by the car’s ability to dance around corners and out-run BMWs, while at the same time turning in very good fuel economy.

For the 2012 model year, Porsche is updating the 911, although you would hardly know it from looking at the bodywork. The overall design remains the same, but Porsche managed to shed 100 pounds from the car.

And along with Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox, the PDK, this new 911 can be had with a seven-speed manual transmission. This is the first production car to boast more than six gears with a manual stick. The extra gear should contribute to greater fuel economy, along with driver confusion depending on how well Porsche designed the gate.

Porsche will officially unveil the new 911 at next month’s Frankfurt auto show.

Most successful race car now suitable for wider range of motorsport

Stuttgart. It is the most successful race car on earth: The Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. With over 2,200 units sold, it is the undisputed number one amongst customer racing teams all over the world. Now, the new 911 GT3 Cup features a 100-litre FT3 safety fuel tank, which is filled via an opening in the front bonnet. Compared to its predecessor, the vehicle is now suitable for an even wider range of endurance racing. Moreover, the new fuel tank contributes to a further improvement of the high safety standards.

The 2012-spec Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is based on the lightweight 911 GT3 RS (997) street sports car. The power unit is largely identical to the production engine of the 911 GT3 RS with the same output of 450 bhp and the same maximum engine speed of 8,500 rpm. A race exhaust system with a controlled catalytic converter keeps emissions to a minimum.

The flared wheel arches at the front axle accommodate light alloy rims measuring 9.5Jx18 with 25/64-18 Michelin race tyres. The light alloy rims at the rear measure 12Jx18 with 30/68-18 tyres. Depending on the type of racing, the new 911 GT3 Cup features different rim specifications. The blade-type anti-roll bars at the front and rear are adjustable in seven positions allowing an extremely precise set-up for each race track. Exclusive to the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup which runs as support to Formula 1 is the PCCB Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake. This is also available for Porsche‘s road models. Compared to the composite cast brakes in the Carrera Cups and the GT3 Cup Challenges, PCCB reduces the weight of the car by around 20 kilograms.

The cockpit of the new 911 GT3 Cup caters for the needs of the driver. The controls for the info display are positioned on the steering wheel which houses six switches. As in the production car, the reach and height of the steering wheel can be adjusted.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will be delivered to teams around the world from September and will be run in this specification for the 2012 and 2013 race seasons in selected one-make cup series. The price is 161,750 Euro plus value-added tax of the respective countries.

Currently, the 911 GT3 Cup competes in 19 Porsche brand trophy series worldwide. Moreover, it is run in various GT race series and at long distance events. The 911 GT3 Cup is the basis model of Porsche’s racing vehicle range. Additionally, Porsche Motorsport offers the 911 GT3 R for championships complying with GT3 regulations and the 911 GT3 RSR built according to GT2 rules.

Porsche All But Confirms Plans for a Mid-Engine Supercar to Slot Between the 911 and 918

Limited Production 918 Spyder - Barrier Porsche

Porsche executives have spoken in great detail about the possible development of  a mid-engine supercar that  would be positioned between the higher-performance 911 models and the limited-production 918 (shown above).  A German newspaper Handelsblatt interview with , Porsche CEO Matthias Müller said “there would be room for a mid-engine sports car above the 911.” Such a model “in a price segment of 400,000 euros” has good chances of being built”.

The new mid-engine supercar will specifically target Ferrari’s 458 Italia and any successor—this benchmark will be sure to gain the attention of Ferdinand Piech, the head of the VW Group’s supervisory board and a  Ferrari aficionado.  He has gone on the record before saying that Porsche is “a diamond in need of being polished.” This car could be the car to fulfill  his dreams. Also, the supercar would appeal to potential buyers who prefer the inherently balanced dynamics of mid-engine cars to rear-engine layouts such as the 911.

No details have emerged yet, but it’s very likely that the supercar will use many modular sports components as is in the next generation of Audi, Lamborghini and Porsche sports cars. You can assume 911-Turbo-topping power of 600 hp or more, 0-to-60 times in the three-to-four-second range, and a top speed north of 200 mph. The car will most likely use aluminum and carbon fiber to keep its weight down, it probably won’t be of  hybrid technology  like the upcoming 918—will be just about twice as expensive.

2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Goes Green

Published by Barrier Porsche on August 6th, 2011

Purists howled when the company founded by Dr. Porsche released the Cayenne in 2003. After producing nothing but sports cars for 63 years, Porsche was now selling a midsize luxury crossover, just like practically every other car manufacturer on the planet. Although the front end bore a passing resemblance to the 911, the rest was pure unrecognizable– five doors, all-wheel-drive and an engine mounted in the front.

But Porsche knew what it was doing. The Cayenne became the company’s best selling vehicle, helped by a range of engine choices that included a twin-turbocharged 4.5-liter V8 that cranked out 520 horsepower, enough to propel it from zero to 60 in under five seconds. The profits also allowed the company to invest in existing sports cars, resulting in the current, highly-acclaimed version of the 911. Come by Barrier Porsche to test drive a Porsche today!

But now Porsche has thrown even Cayenne fans a curve – a hybrid version called the Cayenne S Hybrid. It combined a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor to produce a combined 380 horsepower while still being rated at 20 city and 24 highway miles per gallon by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

That’s better than the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (17/19 mpg) and competitive against three German diesel crossovers, BMW X5 xDrive 35d (19/26 mpg), the Mercedes-Benz ML350 BlueTec (18/25 mpg), and the Audi Q7 TDI (17/25 mpg).

Driven aggressively or in the Sport mode, the Cayenne S Hybrid is much more fun, offering a balanced mix of good acceleration, handling and braking. The steering is light and direct, the brakes feel much better, and the transmission moves swiftly through the gears.

The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 is made by Audi and also offered in their A4 and A5. It is smooth and responsive, producing 33 more horsepower than the base, normally-aspirated 3.0-liter V6 in the Cayenne.

The interior of the Cayenne is one of its strengths. Similar to the equally controversial Panamera four-door sports car, it features a center console that angles down from the dash between the front seats. The console holds many of the control buttons that were originally spread across the dash, reducing the cluttered look while still making them all easily accessible. Expect other manufacturers to adopt similar designs in the coming years to accommodate the controls for the many high-tech features that are now becoming standard on even entry-level cars.
