New Porsche building revealed

Published by Barrier Porsche on November 25th, 2011

In two years Porsche will rise from the rubble of the former Ford Taurus plant. A plot of land in Hapeville, Georgia near the Atlanta airport was once the site where Taurus sedans and their Mercury Sable twins were made until 2006. Torn down in 2008, the land was cleansed and purchased by Porsche as the site of its new headquarters/destination/brand jewel. The Stuttgart marque has chosen architectural firm HOK – who did Yankee and Wembley Stadiums and the National Air and Space Museum among many other things – for the honors.

Above is a rendering of what’s coming in fall of 2013, and those with keen eyes will notice the courtyard is shaped like a Porsche shield. The complex will bring together Porsche’s various operations as well as a Porsche Experience Center to complement the West Coast version being built in California.

Porsche Singer 911

Published by Barrier Porsche on November 19th, 2011

Though the modern Porsche 911 has retained much of the same style as the original, there’s still something about a classic Carrera that attracts a certain breed of enthusiast. That’s what led to the creation of the Singer 911, and what has apparently motivated a German tuning outfit called DP Motorsport to retrofit a 1973 model to lightweight specification.

The modifications start with a complete carbon fiber rebody. The front and rear bumpers, hood, fenders, doors and whale tail have all been replaced with the lightweight weave, while the windows and lamp covers have all been ditched in favor of lighter-weight replacements. The result is a 870-kilogram (1,918-pound) curb weight instead of 1,080 to 1,335 kg (2,380-2,943 lbs) stock. But that’s only half of the less weight, more power ratio equation.

DP Motorsport has also fitted a 3.6-liter flat-six with 310 horsepower, enhanced by a new carburetor and filters, fitted to a G-50 gearbox and limited-slip differential. It rides on 16-inch Fuchs wheels on a coilover suspension with adjustable stabilizers, and they’ve fitted the brakes from a 964. The interior has likewise been lightened, fitted with bucket seats and swathed in grippy black Alcantara.

Porsche seeking higher sales

Published by Barrier Porsche on November 16th, 2011

Volkswagen is on a role right now, and management in Wolfsburg hopes that winning streak results in the company becoming the largest automaker by volume by 2018 or sooner. Those ambitious sales goals stretch to VW’s many brands as well, including Porsche.

The Detroit Bureau reports that Porsche is looking to double sales by 2015, with new products and emerging markets leading the charge. The numbers involved are taking last year’s 97,000 vehicles sold worldwide and hitting a nice, round 200,000 by mid-decade. The new products that will help spur sales are the recently released 2012 911, the forthcoming Cajun mini ute and perhaps the sub-Boxster entry-level Porsche that we’ve been hearing about for years.

Those models would likely help improve sales here in the U.S., which is still the number one market for Porsche. But the performance and luxury car maker is also hoping to make inroads in the world’s three biggest emerging markets: China, Russia and India. Those markets are clamoring for luxury autos right now, and Porsche is all too happy to help fill the void.

Porsche board member Wolfgang Hatz added at a preview of the new 911 that profitability will remain a major focus. Porsche has long boasted a ridiculously good 15 percent Return on Sales number, and Hatz and company want to keep that advantage as sales improve.

Japanese Porsche builder branching out

Published by Barrier Porsche on November 9th, 2011

Barrier Porsche is a huge fan of the work of RAUH-Welt, a small Japanese tuner that manufactures custom Porsche’s. RAUH-Welt has had a drastic increase in renown lately due to the constant referencing done by Speedhunters.

Up until now, RAUH-Welt was purely a Japan based company, but now due to SEMA we’re starting to see some American built Porsche’s by them. There are 2 models in particular that they built right here in America, one of which is a white 911 (shown below) built partially to help promote a new brand by Ken Block.

Porsche Panamera re outfitted

Published by Barrier Porsche on November 1st, 2011

The Porsche Panamera doesn’t need much help in the performance department. Styling may be another matter, however. German tuning house Edo Competition has tackled both with its latest tuning kit.

Starting with the Panamera S, the package called Hellboy takes output from the 4.8-liter V8 up from 395 horsepower to 459 for a 4.6-second sprint to 62 and a 191-mile-per-hour top end. The rest of the package is rounded out with 21-inch alloys mounted to a suspension that’s been lowered by 30mm, plus a full carbon fiber aero kit and a retrofitted interior.
