Porsche 911 Wins Autoweek Award At The Detroit Auto Show

Published by PGI Auto on January 18th, 2012

Autoweek gives out four awards each year during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit; Most Significant, Best Concept, Most Fun and Best In Show.  For 2012, the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet was the big ‘Most Fun’ winner and the judges say it was an easy choice.

The 911 had some tough competition in the form of the Mini Cooper Roadster, Hyundai Veloster Turbo and Mercedes SL.  With it’s sporty exterior, seven-speed automatic transmission and 3.8 liter 6 cylinder engine that has 400HP, gets to 60mph in 4.1 seconds and tops out at 187 mph, the judges couldn’t imagine a car you could have more fun in.

Natalie Neff of the judges panel said, “Top-shelf performance in a premium package also turns our heads.  We love the all-new Porsche 911, so it should come as no surprise that we would endorse a drop-top variant of our Most Fun car of the show – in this case, by acclamation.”

Other improvements include fuel economy, the wheel size, Electric Power Steering, a new seven-speed transmission and a new engine.  The standard Boxster will have a 2.7 liter 6 cylinder engine providing 265HP which will get you to 60mph in 5.4 seconds.  The Boxster S will get you 60 more HP bringing it up to 315HP and getting you to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

The body of the new Boxster has a fresher look and design as well.  Deeper scoops and longer lines exentuate the sportiness of the car, as do the elongated headlights and small spoiler in the rear.  Inside the Boxster there’s a wide center console that is reminiscent of the Carrera GT with its sleek and sporty design.

Porsche Celebrates 2011 Sales Increase

Published by PGI Auto on January 4th, 2012

Porsche’s US division has plenty to celebrate as 2012 rolls in.  They just announced their 2011 yearly sales which shows a 15% increase from 2010.  Since not only Porsche, but all auto sales were down a significant amount only three years ago, a steady incline of new units sold is helping to put a big smile on their faces.

Porsche has the success of the new Cayenne SUV and 911 to thank for the majority of the increased sales.  The Cayenne itself saw a 56% increase with a total of 12,978 units sold in the US.  The 2011 Cayenne was completely redesigned from the debut 2003 model.  It proved to be quicker, roomier and generally more efficient than its predecessors.  When a manufacturer is able to add these things, put in a higher performing engine and still shave off a few hundred pounds of the vehicle, people stop to pay attention.

The 911 contributed with a 5% increase, putting the final US sales number at 5,735 units.  Some of the new components the 911 saw for its 2011 model were a redesigned suspension, electrically-assisted power steering, a push-button handbrake, more powerful engines and the seven-speed manual transmission.  The US was understandably impressed and Porsche has the numbers to prove it.

Porsche Cars North America’s President and CEO said of the increased sale numbers, “We are confident we will build on this momentum moving forward into the new year with the launch of the 7th generation 911, a new Boxster and several other new products.”
