Porsche Tuner Invests Diamond Auto Paint

Published by PGI Auto on May 29th, 2012

There are constantly changing trends in high-end vehicles and the modifications that are done to them after-market.  Spinning chrome rims on wheels, or cars dropped low to the ground, even the colors of the blinker lights are tail lights are changed by some owners and after-market professionals.

Recently, a famous German Porsche tuner called Gemballa has come up with a new paint color that has caused quite a stir and may be the start of a new trend – people using precious gems on their vehicle.  The company has announced that it has invented a paint color, which appears to be metallic silver, and is made using ground-up diamonds. The paint can be used to coat the exterior or interior of the vehicle.

Not many details have been released, like how many carats it will take to paint an entire car, or how much this paint job will cost.  Though, if you can afford to put diamonds on your car, is highly likely a few hundred dollars isn’t that much a difference.

Porsche Talks Details of the 2014 918 Spyder

Published by PGI Auto on May 15th, 2012

Today, Porsche released photos of one 2014 918 Spyder model along with some specifics about what we can expect from the roadster and confirmed a 2013 release date.  Earlier this month, Porsche began testing the Spyders in secret locations in order to avoid paparazzi spy shots which could spoil the big reveal.

Though the original 2014 918 Spyder concept has a 3.2 liter V8 engine, we have learned the production version will be powered by a much larger 4.6 liter V8 engine which will produce around 570HP.  The engine will be attached to two electric motors which should add another 200HP, equaling a combined 770HP.  Overall, Porsche is predicting 0-60 times of under 3.0 seconds and a top speed of over 202 mph when all power sources are working.  All this power with an expected fuel economy that could be as high as 78 mpg.

The exterior design will be very close to the concept version with some subtle changes.  The most noticeable of these changes is the relocation of the exhaust outlets from the side of the car to the top of the engine bay.

New Porsche Boxster Earns Better EPA Ratings

Published by PGI Auto on May 9th, 2012

The 2013 Porsche Boxster’s new 2.7-liter direct-injection flat-6 engine gets considerably much better fuel economy than the previous 2.9 liter engine.  The best part is, it’s also more powerful.

The EPA has just released their ratings for the Boxster, and the vehicle is gaining no little amount of automotive industry attention because of it.  According to these ratings, the 2013 Boxster, with seven-speed PDK automatic transmission, gets 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.  The previous Boxster had a rating of  20/city and 29/highway for the automatic version.  The six-speed manual transmission saw some improvement, too, raising its previous MPG raiting of 19/city and 27/highway to 20/city and 30/highway.

The good thing about Porsche is that they have providing better vehicles down to a science.  They didn’t have to compromise anything in order to reach these better ratings, they were even able to give the vehicle more horsepower.  The new 2.7 6 cylinder engine provides 262HP over last year’s 2.9 engine which provided 255.
