When the 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo, previously owned by Bill Gates, was put up for auction, auctioneers estimated they could fetch around $50,000 for the classic, which they said was worth between $48,495 and $62,173. In fact, the 3.3-liter 300HP roadster sold for just under $80,000 to German bidder who sent his bid via telephone.
“There was enormous interest in this item from all over the world,” the Daily Mail quoted spokesman Wolfgang Humer as telling the Austrian Times. According to this newspaper, the car was one of the first rewards the software giant bought himself after founding Microsoft a few years previous.
Bill Gates is an a very famous and extremely wealthy man. His net worth was estimated at $61 billion, even after he gave away one third of his personal wealth to charity. He has a 10-car garage that houses another Porsche along with other roadsters and luxury vehicles that he drives more often. He sold this particular Porsche in the 1990′s, but it is still worth more for having been in his possession.
