The New Porsche 911 at the Geneva Motor Show

Published by PGI Auto on March 13th, 2013

Volvo has condensed their available model line in the U.S. to the five most popular models.  As the popularity of vehicle body types is changing in the U.S., so are the available vehicles.  The wagon and larger SUVs have become not nearly as popular as crossovers, mid-size sedans and practical small cars.  This has inspired Volvo to cut their coupe and convertible model in the U.S., leaving three crossovers and two sedans, like the new Volvo S60 in Bellevue.

Volvo is refreshing or redesigning every vehicle available in the U.S. over the next couple of years.  They are now considering bringing back a newly designed full wagon vehicle to be apart of this lineup, as it was the family wagon that originally made Volvo so popular in the ’80s.

The newly designed vehicle are getting Volvo plenty of automotive media attention and have caused prediction of higher sales and bigger chunk of the market share in America.

Porsche Unveils New 911 GT3

Published by PGI Auto on March 5th, 2013

During this year’s Geneva Auto Show, where globally popular vehicles make their world debuts, Porsche unveiled their brand new Porsche 911 GT3, set to be released for the next model year.  This will be the fastest and most powerful GT3 yet, topping out at a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds and a maximum speed of 196 MPH.

This new Porsche 911 in Bellevue will be powered by a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine providing 475 horsepower and 325 lb ft of torque.  It will be assisted by forged pistons and titanium rods, hollow valve stems and its lighter weight.  Now, if these numbers mean little or nothing to you, let’s just say this car can snap your head back with its powerful acceleration, and drive you faster than you’ve ever been driven before, (unless you’ve raced performance vehicles on the race track).

New Porsche 911 Showcases New Shifting System

Published by PGI Auto on August 31st, 2012

There is an art to driving any sports car properly, especially a manual transmission Porsche.  When it comes to cars like the Porsche 911, there are nuances to shifting properly when you start, speed up, slow down and stop.  When slowing down, Porsche roadster drivers used to have to use a “heel-and-toe” method in order to stab the throttle while braking, matching the engine rev with the transmission speed, and ultimately smoothing any vehicle weight transition.

With the new Sport Plus Mode in some of the new Porsche Carrera 911s, this is done for you.  The system is built to automatically recognize when the driver is ready to downshift and then match the engine and transmission speeds.

Porsche has confirmed that the Carreras won’t be the only 911s with this fun shifting system.  The rest of the 911 models should have it within the next couple years, and probably on to the Boxster.

Fully restored classic 73′ Porsche 911 T Coupe

Published by Barrier Porsche on October 8th, 2011

Thanks to the “Revive the Passion” project, a US version 911 T Coupe from the year 1973 is one of the main attractions at this year’s Porsche Parade organized by the Porsche Club of America (PCA). As part of the festival week for all Porsche enthusiasts in Savannah, Georgia, from July 31 to August 7, the fully restored classic will be raffled off among PCA members and handed over to its new owner.

The winner can look forward to becoming the proud owner of a collector’s item of great value. This is because the 911 T has been restored to its former glory by the experts at Porsche Classic in its home city of Stuttgart, where it was originally produced for the US market. “Made in Germany” for the second time – after 38 years.

The idea for “Revive the Passion” was born during the “Rennsport Reunion” in Daytona in 2007. During a conversation, representatives of the PCA, Porsche Club Service and Porsche Classic took the decision to offer an attractive Porsche classic car instead of a new vehicle in the traditional PCA raffle. A suitable car was found near Los Angeles and was subsequently presented to club members at the Porsche Parade 2010 in St. Charles, Illinois, in its then rather pitiful condition. The 911 T then went on a journey to Stuttgart, where the experts at Porsche took care of the vehicle.

The US version 911 T Coupe originates from the last year of production of the so-called F-model. It features an air-cooled flat-six engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters and a power output of 103 kW (140 hp) at 5,600 rpm. Its top speed is 127 mph (205 km/h). This Porsche is characterized by its narrow body and is finished in the classic color combination Silver Metallic (exterior) and Black (interior). Paul Gregor from the Porsche Club Service: “The body form, color combination and year of production make this vehicle especially popular among collectors and ensure good value retention.”

However, there was not much of this to be seen before the start of restoration. The specialists in the Porsche Classic workshop received a vehicle without headlights or windows. The paint had peeled off and numerous parts, some even “home-made”, were not from the original vehicle equipment. In addition, there were many defects in the interior. Nothing is known to the present day about the history of the vehicle and the long period out of service meant that the vehicle was clearly suffering from the ravages of time. The remains of bird’s nests were even found in the underbody.

In the Porsche Classic workshop close to Stuttgart, work is carried out only with original tools, original parts (or parts reproduced on the basis of original drawings) and using original data and dimensions. Alexander Fabig, Head of Porsche Classic: “Every year they restore around 250 Porsche classic cars from all over the world, from the 356 through to the last air-cooled 911 model, the Type 993.

Work on the 911 T took just under a year, from complete disassembly through to complete transformation. Right down to the very last screw, there was no part that did not pass through the hands of the experts at Porsche Classic to be checked, refurbished or replaced. For the extensive body work, the mechanics used either original parts or parts reproduced on the basis of the original documentation. In contrast, the latest methods were used to treat the body for corrosion protection. Electrophoretic dip coating is a standard process in the automotive industry. It guarantees optimum priming of the bodyshell and is therefore also used during complete restoration of vehicles at Porsche Classic. The experts at Porsche Classic have also moved with the times in terms of paints and therefore use only water-based multiple-coat paints for environmental reasons. As part of final acceptance, the vehicle was also subjected to stringent function and performance tests, using methods from current production in some cases.

The 911 T Coupe now shines again in its former glory and exudes the sporty charm of the 70s. Whether it is too valuable to move or too beautiful to be admired only standing still is something that the new owner must decide. The chances are that the temptation to drive the 911 T will just be too great.

Porsche | 2012 911 GT3 R | Upgrades

Published by Barrier Porsche on September 10th, 2011

Porsche will unveil the next-generation 911 (991) at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but that doesn’t mean the current model (997) is going away anytime soon. Case in point, the company has just announced a series of upgrades for the 2012 911 GT3 R.  Stop by and check out the newest inventory at Barrier Porsche.

Porsche 911 GT3 R

First and foremost, the model gains a revised 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine with an optimized intake system. This enables it to produce 500 PS (368 kW / 493 hp) – an increase of 20 PS (15 kW / 20 hp).

Besides the extra power, the car has a softer front anti-roll bar and an upgraded six-speed sequential transmission (with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters) for quicker gear changes.

The 911 GT3 R represents the mid-range of Porsche’s customer racing vehicles. The 911 GT3 Cup, as the top-selling race car in the world, serves as the basis. Ranking above the 911 GT3 R is the 911 GT3 RSR, built for GT2 racing, which competes in series like the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and at the Le Mans 24 hour race.

The 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 R will be delivered to racing teams in November and pricing starts at €304,500 ($434,170).

Could the 2012 Porsche 911 Convertible be getting a folding hardtop?

Published by Barrier Porsche on August 31st, 2011

A recently discovered patent is suggesting the 2012 Porsche 911 Convertible could feature a new roof that is part hardtop and part soft top. The odd design certainly raises some eyebrows, but the roof section would apparently be metal while the rear window area has traditional canvas. This could help to eliminate the ungainly styling that is associated with folding metal roofs, but it also defeats some of the security benefits which are inherit in that design.  Curious about the exciting new features in the Porsche 911, come talk to Barrier Porsche in Bellevue!

Does a purchase anywhere else make sense? The value is here with Barrier!

The all-new Porsche 911 (991) is one of the most anticipated cars. While it’s merely a matter of hours until Porsche pulls the wraps off of the 2012 911 Coupe, many have been wondering about the roof for the 991 convertible models. Any discussion mostly comes down to this: Will Porsche be bold enough to introduce a metal folding roof?

Some time ago, Porsche filed a patent for a 4-panel metal folding roof. This made many believe that Porsche would actually follow the likes of the Ferrari California.

German Car Forum did a search for patent applications Porsche has filed and found patent US 7,607,715 B2 which reveals the twist. Porsche is apparently set to combine a regular canvas top with a metal folding roof.

The roof comprises of four panels with at least the first and fourth panel being sheet-like penals, i.e. metal panels. The suprise however is the canvas top layer covering the whole roof. This canvas layer is fixed permanently to the whole area of the first and fourth panel, yet it’s fixed to the two panels in the middle only partially. This allows the canvas to remain flexible in that area during roof operation.

This begs one question: Why? According to Porsche’s patent application, this invention makes sure that an “attractive outer contour is ensured by the sheet-like supporting elements when the roof is closed”. There might be no other canvas top sitting that tight when the roof is closed. It allows even the 911 convertible to sport the signature 911 roofline formerly found in the coupe models only.

One would assume that 911 convertible owners wouldn’t want to miss a canvas top yet also welcome the increased ridigity coming with metal folding roofs (when closed).
